Successful family portraits capture emotions that register with the viewer as happiness, contentment and unity as a group. This can be achieved in any setting with sufficient effort by the photographer. One must shoot until the goal is met. Group portraits can be perfect except for one member and when this happens the photographer should have Photoshop skills that allow him to bring a face from another shot into the otherwise perfect shot and correct the image to achieve perfection. I have been using Photoshop since 1991 and possess the skill to make a group shot perfect.
